dScience Lunch Seminar: Are all breast cancer carcinomas detected at screening progressive?

Join the dScience lunch seminar at the dScience lounge to hear biostatistician Harald Weedon-Fekj?r discuss the complexities of mammography screening. He will explore the debate around non-progressive tumours detected through screening and how statistical modeling helps provide insights at the population level. If you’re interested in the public health balance of cancer screening, this talk is not to be missed.

Presentation

Mammography screening is a common public health service for middle-aged women in high income countries, aiming to improve cancer prognosis through earlier treatment. As almost all screen detected lesions are treated, we cannot directly observe the true fate of screening detected tumors. Hence, there is a debate regarding the possibility of non-progressive lesions being detected at mammography screening. While tracking individual tumor progression is not possible, we use statistical modeling at population-level to provide insights into the frequency of non-progressive tumors detected through screening.

Speaker

Harald Weedon-Fekj?r is a biostatistician at OCBE – Oslo Center for Biostatistics and Epidemiology, working with epidemiological research, teaching, and consulting of medical doctors in biostatistics. He graduated from the University of Oslo with a master’s in mathematical statistics in 1999. After working with cancer incidence predictions at the Cancer Registry of Norway and distance teaching of medical statistics at the University of Oslo, Harald defended a PhD on modelling of breast cancer progression and screening in 2008 at the Department of Biostatistics. The fourth paper from his PhD work was in 2008 selected as "Article of the Year" by the Norwegian Epidemiological Association. After his PhD, he spent a semester at Dana-Farber/Harvard University in Boston, USA, before returning to Norway for a postdoc and later joining OCBE in a permanent research position in 2013. His research interests include the complex metrological challenges of evaluating screening programs, statistical programming, and looking into the delicate public health balance of benefits and harms of cancer screening.

Program

11:30 – Doors open and lunch is served

12:00 – "Are all breast cancer carcinomas detected at screening progressive?" by Harald Weedon-Fekj?r (Senior Researcher, Oslo Centre for Biostatistics & Epidemiology – OCBE)

This event is open for all students, PhD candidates, postdocs, and everyone else who is interested in the topic. No registration needed.

About the seminar series

Once a month, dScience will invite you to join us for lunch and professional talks at the Science Library. In addition to these, we will serve lunch in our lounge in Kristine Bonnevies house every Thursday. Due to limited space (40 people), this will be first come, first served. See how to find us here.

Our lounge can also be booked by PhDs and Postdocs on a regular basis, whether it is for a meeting or just to hang out – we have fresh coffee all day long!
