About the musicians

Espen Folmo (b. 1980) made his debut at the University Aula in 2001. From the age of 9 to 20, he had the privilege and deep appreciation of studying with Geir-Otto Nilsson, a lecturer at the Norwegian Academy of Music, as his teacher. He later studied guitar at the Norwegian Academy of Music with Erik Stenstadvold. Simultaneously, he participated in masterclasses with several of the world's most distinguished guitarists. Two of these, Carlo Domeniconi and Leo Brouwer, will be brought to life in the concert. Folmo rarely performs concerts and has not been a professional musician since he was 20, but music is his true religion and profound spiritual practice.

The concert opens with the exotic piece Koyunbaba by the Italian composer Domeniconi, inspired by Turkish music. J.S. Bach forms the core of the program. This is the composer Folmo holds in the highest regard, and BWV 998, 1000, and 1006 are works he fell in love with as a child and has delved into ever since.

The fifth piece is the final movement from "El Decameron Negro," Balada de la Doncella Enamorada ("Ballad of the Lovestruck Maiden"), written by the Cuban Leo Brouwer (born March 1, 1939). The sixth and final piece Folmo performs is the Japanese Sakura ("Cherry Blossoms") by Yuquijiro Yocoh. This lyrical work was also on the program when Folmo made his debut at the Aula in 2001.
 

Arild Hammer? (b. 1982) is a guitarist, singer, and composer with an impressive and eclectic background spanning a wide array of musical styles and genres. He is renowned for his skill as both an electric and acoustic guitarist. Hammer? has released albums and performed live under his own name, with the duo Hammer & Hersk, the prog rock band Tenderton, and the Spellemann-nominated Atlanter. The albums "Dagen som gryr" (2008), "Fl?te" (2012), and "Lerret" (2020) showcase many of Hammer?'s acoustic compositions, which employ both unusual guitar tunings and a distinctive rhythmic fingerpicking style.

In the concert, Hammer? will present colorful and melodic original compositions for guitar.
