As board representative for the temporary employees at the University of Oslo, I will work for better working conditions and a more efficient use of our time. Norway is a small nation and we are dependent on developing a high level of competence, as well as sustainable and profitable innovation. It is therefore important to ensure excellent scientific work while safeguarding the autonomy and professional focus that research requires.
Temporary positions have an important role in research projects, and for recruitment and development to permanent jobs at UiO. It is therefore essential that this time is managed responsibly and purposefully to the benefit of both the employee and the university.
To ensure the recruitment of good candidates, the terms should be competitive, and everyone must be treated fairly and professionally throughout the entire employment period. I think it is particularly important that temporary employees, and also new permanent staff, who are involved in teaching are followed up closely to ensure a good learning environment.
With experience from boards in various organizations over more than 30 years and participation in management groups in private business since 2010, I have experience with organisational governance and leadership. When there were repeated calls for board nominations, I thought that my knowledge could be useful in strengthening the important role the university has for modern society. Experience in establishing strategies and following up plans to achieve concrete goals is very useful in board work. Understanding the relationship between the criteria by which results are measured and the impact it has on the work delivered in the business is critical.
I first attended this University as a youth, and I have returned for further studies while working in IT management before choosing to commit to full time research. Early in my career I also worked in the staff at one of the university research centres, so I have seen the university from different vantage points.
Although I primarily will represent the temporary employees, I think it is important to think about those who are on their way here, those we have an influence on, and about the different ways forward for those of us who have chosen temporary employment at UiO. If I am elected I will work to strengthen and highlight the scientific and practical contribution we make to society, and to further raise the reputation of the University of Oslo.
