Calculation of the self-certified sick leave period for part-time employees

As part-time employee you are, just like full-time employees, entitled to 24 work days with self-certified sick leave in the course of 12 calendar months. However, self-certified sick leave can only be used for whole work days and weekends, official holidays and work-free days between to days of self-certified sick leave are included in the count.

Part-time employees who work every day at reduced working hours

One work day with self-certified sick leave is considered as one sick leave day.

Part-time employees who work whole work days but less than five days per week

  • If you as part-time employee are sick with self-certified sick leave before AND after a work-free day, the work-free day is calculated as part of the self-certified sick leave period. For example, if you normally work on Monday and Wednesday and submit a self-certified sick leave certificate for these days, Tuesday is calculated as part of the the self-certified sick leave period. You will have used three days of self-certified sick leave.
  • The same goes for when you are sick with self-certified sick leave before AND after a holiday or weekend.

Regulations

The use of self-certified sick leave is regulated in the Social Security Act, Section 8-24 (lovdata.no) (Norwegian). The Act does not take account of work days but only calculates calendar days, cf. Social Security Act, Section 8-24, fourth paragraph (lovdata.no) (Norwegian).
