Material Transfer Agreements (MTA)
If the parties to a research project will need to exchange materials, substances, cell lines or similar (physical material), such exchange shall be regulated by an MTA. UiO can only supply material or objects to be used for purposes of research or teaching. Under an MTA, no material owned by UiO can be supplied for commercial purposes.
Human biological material shall never be collected, used or supplied to others without prior consideration of the provisions in the Health Research Act, and all necessary approvals/declarations of consent must be available. UiO's quality assurance system for health and medical research must be followed in use of human biologicial material for research purposes.
The contract template is developed to be used when UiO is the provider of the material to others. We have added some remarks in the template for guidance. These must be removed when the template is used, and the template must also be adapted to the specific transfer of the material.

Letter of intent
When UiO is entering into collaboration with an external party, it may be appropriate at the initial stage to sign a letter of intent that defines the goals and frameworks for this collaboration. For example, when preparing major applications to the EU and NFR it would make sense to discuss the main principles for preparation of the application and the future collaboration at an early stage, and incorporate these in a letter of intent. If funding is granted and a binding collaboration is established, a regular collaboration agreement shall be prepared.
Framework agreement
If UiO is engaged in comprehensive collaboration with an external institution without any links to specific projects, it may be appropriate to establish a framework agreement that regulates such issues as mutual access to research infrastructure, shared positions, exchange of personnel, principles for co-publishing etc.
Confidentiality agreement
If exchange of information will be needed in connection with research projects and one of the collaboration partners deems this information to be of a confidential nature (trade secrets, unpublished results etc.), it may be appropriate to sign a confidentiality agreement, unless such issues already have been regulated in the collaboration agreement for the project. Whenever exchange of personal information between the partners to a research project may be relevant, the Privacy Protection Ombud shall be consulted and the provisions in the Personal Data Act must be complied with.

Donations
Research funded by any agency, public or private, with no requirements for return services from UiO. The motivations of the external party may be of a purely charitable nature or based on a long-term interest in development of specific academic areas or research communities.
