UiO's committee for Scholars at Risk

The committee for Scholars at Risk at UiO was established in 2009. Current members have been appointed for the period 2022-24. The committee follows up on UiO's involvement in the Scholars at Risk network.

Mandate

Approved by the Rector and University Director 29.08.2024

Purpose

The SAR Committee is an advisory committee to the university leadership on matters related to UiO's collaboration with the university networks Scholars at Risk (SAR) and the Scholar Rescue Fund Alliance (SRF). The committee aims to follow up on UiO's activities in connection with UiO's membership in SAR/SRF, including:

  1. Evaluating potential candidates to be employed as SAR/SRF researchers at UiO
  2. Contributing to the development of UiO's support for host units and SAR/SRF researchers
  3. Proposing and following up on any other activities at UiO related to SAR
  4. Contributing to strengthen and highlight UiO's collaboration with SAR at UiO

Composition

The SAR Committee shall have the following composition, with a total of six members:

  • Five members with personal deputies from the academic staff. The Secretariat will invite relevant faculties to nominate candidates.
  • One student representative appointed by the Student Parliament (for one year)

UiO's SAR Coordinator serves as secretary for the committee. Appointments last for two years, except for the student representative.  See current composition.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • The committee is advisory to the university leadership and can initiate activities independently.
  • Members must notify their deputies if they cannot attend. Deputies are expected to assume full responsibility in the absence of the regular member.
  • Committee members and their deputies will have access to sensitive information about SAR/SRF candidates, which must be handled confidentially.

Working Method

  • The committee shall hold meetings as needed and at least twice per semester.
  • Meetings can be held physically, digitally, or in a hybrid format.
  • The committee may also adopt other forms of communication and collaboration.

Quorum

The committee is considered decision-making when at least half of the six members or their deputies participate.

Amendments to the Mandate

Amendments to this mandate require approval from the university director.

 

Criteria for Prioritizing Candidates

The committee has determined criteria for prioritizing among candidates to be hosted at UiO through Scholars at Risk and the Scholar Rescue Fund.
