What are the EU requirements?

In Horizon 2020, everyone who receives funding is required to guarantee open access to all peer-reviewed academic publications.

This is done in two steps.

Step 1 – Self-archiving

The EU requires everyone who is funded by H2020 to archive a machine-readable electronic copy of the published version or of the final peer-reviewed manuscript accepted for publication in an electronic archive, which in the case of UiO is DUO.

This must be done by the time of publication. This step must be followed even in cases where researchers have published “gold” open access.

Step 2 – “Green” self-archiving, “gold” open access and hybrid open access

As in step 1, the EU requires researchers to archive a machine-readable copy of the published version or of the final peer-reviewed manuscript accepted for publication in an electronic archive. However, researchers are encouraged to publish in open access journals, or in journals that sell subscriptions (hybrid open access), but which provide the opportunity to make individual articles openly available on the Internet.
