When do students see a course in Canvas?

Start date of the semester, publishing and transfer of students – settings for publishing and course start.

Semester start date - start date for published courses

All courses from FS are associated with a semester in Canvas, for example 2019 V?R (2019 SPRING). It is the semester start date for students which decide when students can start using on a published course.

  • Autumn semester: 5 August
  • Spring semester: 2 January
  • Summer semester: 15 June

Override start date for published courses

If you want a different start date than the student startup on a published course, you can override this from the course settings.

  • Register the desired start and tick the check box for "Users can only participate in the topic between these dates"..

What does a student see before the start date?

There is a top level setting (for the FS courses) called 'Restrict students from viewing subject before start date' / 'Begrense studenter fra visning emne f?r startdato'. This affects when students can see and go to the course before the term start date.

  • On a student's dashboard, the published courses do not show up before the start date.

  • Through the menu item Courses > All courses, students can see which courses they are enrolled for, but they can’t open them before the start date.
Note: Unpublished topics the students are enrolled to are also displayed here.

Publishing courses

  • When you publish the course, it is the start date or the overruled start date which determines when the students see and open the course.
  • Note that no courses will be published centrally or automatically. The units or teachers must publish the items themselves when they are ready.

Which students have been transferred?

All enrolled students are transferred to Canvas.

If there are any students missing or complaining that they can’t log in, please let us know and we’ll try to correct the problem.
