Dear colleagues,
Welcome back to another semester! I hope you had a great summer and a lovely holiday!
The autumn semester is kicking off with the great news that we have been allowed to welcome ten medical students from Al-Azhar University in Gaza as exchange students for the English language semester during the fifth academic year of the medicine study programme this autumn.
Several hundred medical students in Gaza fled to Cairo after the war broke out. Ten of these students have now been carefully selected by the management team responsible for the medicine study programme at Al-Azhar University to visit UiO. We have also interviewed and spoken with the students via Zoom.
Doctors needed in Gaza
All education in the Gaza Strip has been suspended. There is now an urgent need for health services and medical staff in the Gaza Strip, both as a result of the acts of war and to manage ordinary disease among the population. By accepting these students, we will gain a greater insight into how we can help Al-Azhar University get its programmes up and running again.
During the summer, there were a number of media posts about the matter and these have been summarised on our web page: Medical students from Gaza will still be able to visit UiO.
Rector Svein St?len, myself and Professor Anne Kveim Lie have all written about why this matter is both important and right for the Faculty and UiO:
- Politics versus administration when people are displaced article in Norwegian (khrono.no)
- Study permit for medical students from Gaza: It’s about political will article in Norwegian (khrono.no)
Faculty leadership news
We would like to welcome our new Faculty Director Hanna Ekeli and our new Head of Section for Finance Helena Müller as they take up their new roles this week. You will have the opportunity to learn more about them in future editions of MED-nytt. We look forward to working together on many important tasks in the coming period.
The Faculty of Medicine attends Arendalsuka 2024
Next week, Faculty staff will participate in several events during Arendalsuka 2024. We will contribute with talks and discussion on key topics relating to study programmes, research and innovation in medicine and health. We have also taken the initiative to arrange a joint event with other health-related faculties at UiB, NTNU and UiT on how we can best perform our roles as institutions critical to society. See an overview of our events here.
I would now like to wish you all a great start to the autumn semester and the best of luck with your studies, teaching, research, innovation and everything the administration does to ensure that everything runs smoothly at this incredible faculty. It is a pleasure to work with you all!
See you around!
Yours sincerely, Hanne
