Institute of Clinical Medicine receives funding for breast cancer research
Therese S?rlie will lead the project in which she will investigate pre-invasive breast cancer stages where the milk ducts are filled with cancer cells, but these have not yet spread into surrounding breast tissue. The grant from the Norwegian Cancer Society is just under 6 million NOK. Read more
Researcher at Institute of Clinical Medicine presented with Young Investigator Award
Doctoral Research Fellow Christine Rootwelt-Norberg aims to become a leading professional in genetic cardiology. She recently received an award for her presentation at the EuroEcho conference. Read more
NOK 25 million awarded to the G?zen Group
Head of the NCMM Group, Dr. Irep G?zen, and her partners have been awarded a large interdisciplinary research grant from the Research Council of Norway and the University and, through their research, will help answer fundamental scientific questions relating to autophagy. NOK 1.2 million awarded to four joint projects
Joint seed funding from NCMM and the Arctic University of Norway has been awarded to four projects that are investigating lung cancer treatment, pathogenic bacterial cells, breast cancer metastases and the progression of kidney inflammation. Read the full story in English on the NCMM web page
Five new teams ready for SPARK Norway
Five new teams have been admitted to SPARK Norway, the UiO:Life Sciences innovation programme for health-related life sciences. The teams will further develop their own ideas for the benefit of patients and society. Employees from Institute of Clinical Medicine are involved in all of the teams. Study programmes
Students have fared well during the pandemic
Those studying medicine and nutrition at the University of Oslo have generally remained satisfied with their studies during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the 2021 Studiebarometeret survey, they even give a slightly higher score for learning outcomes. Read the full story on our study programme web page (in norwegian)
The University of Oslo is experiencing a shortage of supervisors for supervised professional general practice training in March:
“A challenging situation”
Elin Olaug Rosvold, Vice-Dean of Medicine at the University of Oslo and Professor Erik L. Werner, who is responsible for supervised professional training at the Department of Medicine at the University, say that they are struggling to recruit and are experiencing a shortage of supervisors for students who will be completing their general practitioner training in March. The University of Bergen, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Arctic University of Norway all also recognise this situation. The Centre is accepting applications for one additional Research ExceLlence and Innovation in Global HealTh (RELIGHT) project for the 2022-2024 period. Deadline 18 February: RELIGHT – Research ExceLlence and Innovation in Global HealTh. - Call for Summer Research Projects UiO:Energy will fund educational summer research projects between April and October 2022 for students enrolled in their last year of a bachelor’s programme or in their first year of a master’s programme at UiO. We are now inviting UiO researchers to propose projects. Deadline: 20 February
- Throne-Holst grants - human nutrition and related sciences. The foundation awards approximately 1-2 million SEK to researchers annually. The next deadline is 1 March
- University of Oslo: Apply to become a merited teacher. The merit scheme is intended to promote quality in education at the University of Oslo. All permanent academic staff with their primary position at the University of Oslo are eligible to apply. Deadline: 15 March.

Updated overview: Upcoming public defences
- The University of Oslo Helpdesk will deliver a number of digital courses throughout the 2022 spring semester. Each course will be delivered multiple times throughout the semester. You can find an overview of courses, as well as registration details and detailed course information here. The University of Oslo Helpdesk has also created a newsletter that is issued once or twice each month and contains information about upcoming courses during the month. If you want to stay up-to-date with course dates and new courses that will be held, you can sign up to the newsletter via the online form.
- Courses being held by the Library of Medicine and Science during the spring of 2022: We offer courses on searching for literature in PubMed, Web of Science and other academic databases, critical assessment of articles, reference management, open access (OA) publishing and researcher profiling. - Litteraturhuset building, 16 February at 19:00 Organ Donation: Where do you draw the line between life and death? We will discuss the recently approved method for organ donation. In order to maintain confidence in the health service in relation to issues surrounding organ donation, we want to provide some insight into how cDCD will be implemented in practice: How to consider the dying patient and their next of kin? What actually is cDCD?
- 17 February from 17:00 to 18:30. Launch of the Life Science Growth House From the end of February, the new innovation unit at the University of Oslo, the Greenhouse for Life Sciences, will have an open-door policy for researchers and students who need help to mature their concepts at an early stage, as well as managers and administrative employees who support innovative researchers and existing and new partners alike.
- There are still places available on the postdoctoral programme’s course on research communication and application writing. The course is open to anyone who is in the early stages of their research career. Course dates: 30 March - 1 April 2022 and 5 & 6 May 2022. The application deadline is 18 February. Learning outcomes: Identifying relevant sources of funding and the requirements that apply. How to approach a call for proposals and structuring a proposal. Creating a good CV. How to identify the most suitable channel for your research communication. How to stand out in public debate.

Institute of Clinical Medicine: New vaccine could improve the treatment of tuberculosis by Elin Martine Doeland
The vaccine can be administered to people who have already been infected and who are ill. A new study shows that it is safe and strengthens the immune system’s ability to attack the bacteria that cause tuberculosis.
Dagens Medisin: Areas for improvement identified in GPs’ treatment of headaches (in norwegian)
The study identified, among other things, underuse of preventive medications and overuse of painkillers in a number of patients experiencing frequent, chronic headaches.
