Momentum – internship for students
The aim of the internship programme is to introduce students to alternative career paths where they can utilise their knowledge and competence. Companies get access to smart, hard-working students who are interested in learning and contributing.
What is Momentum?
Momentum is a student internship program created by students for students at the UiO Growth House UiO's innovation unit for life sciences, health and technology.
The Growth House has a strategy to create a robust and sustainable engagement around student innovation for all students at UiO. Momentum has been established as part of the student innovation hub UiO iHub at Oslo Science Park.
Momentum is a collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Educational Sciences, and the Faculty of Humanities. The collaboration is run through student engagement in the student associations for Medical Innovation (SMI), Pharmaceutical Innovation (SFI) and Educational Scientific Innovation (SUI).

Our projects:
Project 1,
Novartis Summer Internship 2025: Essential Medicines
Task: Shared Decision Making Practices Among Norwegian Oncologists
Background:
Shared Decision Making (SDM) is a relevant topic among Norwegian oncologists. SDM ensures that patients determine how much information they want about their treatment and understand the consequences of treatment choices or the absence of treatment throughout their illness.
A Nordic patient survey from 2021, conducted among melanoma patients, revealed that a significant number felt they did not receive sufficient information about treatment options. Many also reported inadequate knowledge about how treatment choices would impact their lives after completing therapy.
In Denmark, specific tools and training programs have been developed to promote SDM. Several studies have also evaluated the implementation of SDM in clinical practice.
This project aims to understand how SDM is practiced by Norwegian oncologists and to identify challenges or areas for improvement.
- Relevant Tasks (not exhaustive):
- Investigate how SDM is implemented by Norwegian oncologists.
- Identify the resources Norwegian oncologists require.
- Collect feedback from patient groups regarding their perspectives and needs related to SDM.
- Assess how implementation can be improved based on expert feedback.
- Summarize existing literature, including evaluations by Norwegian health authorities and experiences from Denmark.
Goals & Timeline
A report and presentation will be prepared for a cross-functional team in August 2025.
We are looking for one medical student for this project.
Project 2,
Novartis Summer Internship 2025: Medical Department
Task: Elevated Lp(a) Among Patients at the Lipid Clinic – Prevalence and Treatment
Background:
Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is an LDL-cholesterol-like lipoprotein and a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Approximately 20% of the population has elevated Lp(a) levels, often without knowing it. Patients diagnosed with elevated Lp(a) are frequently referred to lipid clinics.
Currently, no specific medications are available to lower Lp(a). Therefore, treatment focuses on managing other risk factors to reduce overall cardiovascular risk. A new clinical guideline for treating patients with elevated Lp(a) was recently published: Lp(a)-behandlingsveileder-NKTforFH_2024_nett1.pdf.
This project is a collaboration between Novartis and the Lipid Clinic at OUS Aker, aiming to answer the following questions:
- Does a significantly elevated Lp(a) level lead to more aggressive lipid-lowering treatment?
- Are patients with elevated Lp(a) treated according to current guidelines?
- How many patients at the Lipid Clinic have elevated Lp(a) levels (>150 nmol/L, >250 nmol/L, or >400 nmol/L)?
- How many patients with elevated Lp(a) also have familial hypercholesterolemia or established cardiovascular disease?
- How many patients have been assigned the diagnosis code E78.41?
- What is the estimated cardiovascular risk of these patients based on established risk calculators?
Goals & Timeline
A report and presentation will be prepared for a cross-functional team in August 2025.
We are looking for 1-2 students for this project.

More about Momentum
The UiO Growth House wants to support and develop an innovative mindset among students, employees and researchers. To bring this about the Growth House is actively supporting cooperation between academia and industry in a range of programmes. Together with the student associations we want to invite companies to host a 4–6-week internship programme for affiliated students.
The aim of the internship is to introduce students to alternative career paths where they can utilise their knowledge and competence to the fullest.
The internship programme will bring students and companies together for a matchmaking event where the companies present themselves to the students. As a part of the registration companies are asked to confirm that they will follow the guidelines regulating the principles for the internship.
Students are encouraged to apply freely for the various internships at hand, and the company has the option to choose the most suitable candidate for their project.
As an additional incentive for startups and small innovative companies to participate in the program, UiO Growth House will sponsor 50% of the salary and expenses for one of the company's interns. This offer is available on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 10 companies that apply! The only condition is that the company must have fewer than 10 employees.
Any rights to any inventions or other outcomes resulting from the student’s performance of the internship with the company is solely between the company and the student.
