Kristine Bonnevies hus

Planned work on the 3rd and 4th floor

What's happening?

The Estate Department has been working on asbestos abatement and encapsulation in Kristine Bonnevies hus since April 2021. This has been necessary to ensure continued safe working conditions. Work on the 2nd floor, parts of the 3rd floor (zone 3.2 and 3.3) and I-Lab in the basement has finished.

Due to the overall scope of the project, and in accordance with public procurement regulations, we were required to obtain more procurement bids. Therefore, in consultation with the The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MN), we decided to pause the project.

We have now received bids for the remaining work on the 3rd and 4th floor. The costs to complete the project are still high. To ensure that the project is financially viable and complies with health and safety regulations, the Estate Department, together with MN and UiO's Occupational Health Service, will assess alternative solutions and consequences.

NB Update 28.05.24: The work has come to a halt in order to allocate all the workforce to the CREATE project. The asbestos abatement of the 3rd and 4th floors will resume after the summer break in 2024 and will continue until December 2025.

Start date: April 2021
End date: December 2025

Work on Abels terrasse

NB Updated 28.08.24

What's happening?

The Estate Department must replace the membrane and terrace tiles on parts of Abels terrasse due to water leaks from the terrace into the rooms below. Abels terrasse is the plateau that partially surrounds Niels Henrik Abels hus, starting from seminar room 119 and along Moltke Moes vei. We have previously worked on the south side, which is the side facing Georg Sverdrups hus. The interior work is also completed.

We will now continue to work on the eastern terrace, towards Moltke Moes vei. We will remove the terrace tiles, repair the damage, replace the membrane, and then lay new tiles. A temporary roof has already been set up over the work area.

The delay is due to noisy work and new drainage system.

When is it happening?

Start date: Monday, 6th May 2024
End date: Monday, 15th July 2024 Tuesday, 1st October 2024

Consequences

  • Thursday, 27th June and Friday, 28th June: There will be noise during core drilling. We will not be drilling continuously, but sporadically on these two days.
  • The work area will be fenced off.
  • The parking area under the terrace is closed while work is ongoing.
  • There will be noise when we demolish the existing concrete surface. Particularly noisy work will be carried out between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., and between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • When the membrane is replaced, it will be welded, and there might be some odour from this process.
  • The south side of the terrace will remain open.

Facade rehabilitation

What's happening?

The Estate Department will be rehabilitating the facade of Niels Henrik Abels hus. We will externally anchor the entire brick facade, replace the horizontal reinforcements, and replace the internal reinforcements from floors six to twelve. The scaffolding will be delivered at the end of this week. The scaffolding setup will start on Monday, 23rd December. The setup process will take 2-3 weeks. The brickwork itself will begin in week 4, 2025, and is scheduled to be carried out after 3 p.m.

When is it happening?

Start date: end of week 51, 2024
End date: tentatively week 17, 2025

Consequences

  • Significant noise during scaffolding setup and fastening. The noise is particularly noticeable near where the work is carried out, both indoors and outdoors. This is due to drilling. The noise level decreases significantly when moving up one floor and essentially disappears when in other parts of the building. The external brick facades and underlying concrete wall will be anchored. This involves minor interventions into the building but creates a lot of noise during preparation and drilling.
  • The removal of horizontal reinforcements involves grinding away the mortar. This work creates some noise outside but is minimally heard from inside the building.
  • Some dust to be expected outside the building during the removal of mortar. The joints between reinforced sections need to be removed, about every fifth joint.
  • At the start and end of the project, there will be temporary storage of scaffolding parts outside the building until the scaffolding is fully assembled or disassembled.
  • The building will remain open as usual. No need for relocation.
