New printing solution at the UiO

All printers at the UiO will be transferred to a new printing solution. The new solution provides an option for secure printing, meaning that you must present your employee or student card to get your print-out at the printer. Most printers are transferred to the new system during the fall term 2015.

Why?

Printing where you must present your card to get out printouts on paper, is both safe, environmentally friendly and economical. The University wants to be a green university that utilize resources in the best possible way, and now the turn has come modernize the way we print.

Secure

The new system provides secure printing. When printing on a printer with a card reader, will your document will not be printed on paper as soon as you have clicked "Print". You must go to the printer and draw your card over the card reader, and only then the document will be printed on paper. Printed documents will no longer be left open by the printers, where they may be available for all who care to read them.

Environmentally friendly and economic

When you print to a printer with a card reader, the document wil lbe pronted on papaer once you've presented your card. Since by then are standing next to the printer, we no longer need to have print covers. They were the there so that you should be able to find your prints among many others, which are no longer needed. Only this will save thousands of sheets every week - which saves trees and helps to decrease the amount of waste from the UiO. In addition, it is often the case that prints are lying unclaimed on the printer because they are forgotten or no longer of use. Such useless prints will become less frequent with the new system, since you must show up at the printer and present your card to get the printout. And if you've changed your mind and do not need the document printed, you can easily cancel the pront on the pronter or in the self service portal. This will save further both sheets and printer ink. Here we can also see a direct correlation between environmental benefit and financial gain - the fewer prints, the less expenses.

New payment solution

The new system also includes a separate payment solution allowing students pay directly from the self service portal. The payment solution in Studentweb is already closed, so now all students need to go tp utskrift.uio.no to refill their printing accounts.

What does it mean to me?

Local IT transfer the printers to the new system. Once that is done, you will be notified. Not all printers will get a reader and opportunity for secure printing, but all printers will still be transferred to the new system.

What should I do?

Local IT will notify you when the printers you use are transferred to the new system. Before you receive notification, you do not need to do anything.

When you are notified that your printer is transferred, whether your printer has a card reader or not, make sure the correct printer is selected in the Print dialog:
  • To use a printer without a card reader, select the print queue named \\push print \printer-name, where "printer-name" is the name of the printer you want to use. Click Print, and the document will be printet jost as before. You do not need code or card to retrieve the printout.
  • Use a printer with a card reader, select pullprint.uio.no\safecom-hp,  pullprint.uio.no\safecom-xerox or  pullprint.uio.no\safecom-ricoh depending on the brand of printer. Once you have selected the correct printer queue, click Print. You'll then receive an e-mail with the PUK you need to begin using your card to retrieve printouts. Follow these instructions to register your card.
