Internet Guide to International Health

A list of web-sites that we think might be of some interest to you. A search engine is a web-site where you can type in topics you wishes to explore, and get the addresses of web-sites related to those topics.

Search engines

  1. HealthAtoZ: A medicine-specific search engine covering almost 30 subject categories. No specific information on international health.
  2. Medexplorer: A search engine that is specific to health. Besides providing a search capability, it contains approximately 30 subject categories that can provide quick access to topics of interest.
  3. PubMed: PubMed Central (PMC) is the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.
  4. Jstore: Scans of print journals, with 13 health science journals. It is a non-profit organisation.
  5. Google scholar: Google search engine only that it is specific of scientific articles.
  6. Google: The biggest and most popular search engine available. If you can’t find what you are searching for with the other search engines, try this one.

International health web-sites

Global Health Council: The world's largest membership alliance dedicated to saving lives by improving health throughout the world, with global health news and information sources.

The Population Council: International, non-profit institution that conducts research on three fronts: biomedical, social science, and public health. A row of publications can be ordered.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine: Website of Britain’s National School of Public Health – a leading international centre and research institution for international community health.

Institute of Development Studies, Sussex: The web-site of one of Europe’s leading centres for research and information on international development.

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health - Internet Resources: Another compilation of links to Internet sites related to public health, mostly oriented towards USA.

The Alan Guttmacher Institute: Not-for-Profit Corporation for Reproductive Health Research, Policy Analysis and Public Education. USA and worldwide.

United Nations University International Network on Water, Environment and Health: A new member of the academic UN University family of organisations, with a newsletter and information on ongoing projects.

ACTMalaria - Asian Collaborative Training Network for Malaria: Collects, develops, and disseminates training materials and to implement practical training courses to meet the needs of malaria control programs in Southeast Asia and the Mekong valley.

African Malaria Network Trust: Its aim is to promote capacity strengthening performance and impact of Africa malaria R&D and training Institutions. With discussion group, newsletters etc. 

The International Health Economics Association (iHEA): Contains job and conference directories, in addition to articles and the possibility of buying low-cost publications (the latter for members only).

AIDS Economics: The web-site is a collaboration between the World Bank, the European Commission, USAID and UNAIDS. The site focuses on the economics of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment with the aim to help researchers and policy-makers define and implement AIDS-policies.

Community Health Internet Site: USA-based web-site with links to community-health related sites, categorized as Medicine, Health Promotion and Program Evaluation

WHO – World Health Organisation

United Nations: The site contains an alphabetical index (with links) of all United Nations Organisations, in addition to general information about the UN-system.

International Committee of the Red Cross/Red Crescent (ICRC): The web-site includes a country by country listing of ICRC activities and special sections on topical issues such as civil wars, disasters, land mines etc.

Medscape: This web-site provides free, full-text, peer reviewed clinical medicine articles, searcH engine and unrestricted access to MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, and TOXLINE.

Ministries of health: The site provides links to Ministries of Health (and also of Agriculture and Fisheries) world-wide. Good for looking at the activities and organisational structure of the ministries.

UNAIDS: The homepage of the joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS. The web-site has a section on “Best practices” with information about publications.

International Rescue Committee (IRC): USA-based organisation for aid provision to refugees. The web-site has a section on IRC reproductive health programmes.

Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Web-site of the American CDC. The site has a search engine.

International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA): IFMSA represents medical students in more than 50 countries. This web-site lists activities world-wide including projects, publications and links with other organisations, including multidisciplinary Primary Health Care Projects in Sudan, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Burma and Mexico.

IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre: The site provides news and information, advice, research and training, on low-cost water supply and sanitation in developing countries.

Physicians for Human Rights: This is an organisation of health professionals, scientists that uses the knowledge and skills of the medical and forensic sciences to investigate and prevent violations of international human rights and humanitarian law. The web-site provides information about activities and publications.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP): This is the UN-agency concerned with the social development process. The site provides country statistics and randings according to various development indices. Major focus areas are poverty, gender, environment and governance.

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF): The site provides information about publications, statistics and activities.

The World Bank: Site of the World Bank and its constituent regional and specialised banks. The World Bank Group provides substantial support and funding to health, nutrition and population programmes, publishes many cross-cultural reviews, research studies and country-specific documents, country profiles and a large amount of statistical information on most countries.

Southern Africa AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAFAIDS): SAFAIDS is a regional Sub- Saharan HIV/AIDS resource centre established in 1994 and based in Zimbabwe. Since this is the area where HIV/AIDS is most prevalent, this website has some good insight information of the epidemic. Newsletters can be downloaded from this website.

Eurohiv; HIV/AIDS Surveillance in Europe: This is an UNAIDS-WHO collaborating centre dealing with surveillance and monitoring of HIV/AIDS in Europe

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI): GAVI is a global alliance of the private and public with the main goal to saving peoples lives and health through widespread use of vaccinations. Newsletters and information concerning vaccination programs can be found here.

Medicines Sans Frontieres (MSF)- Doctors Without Borders: MSF is an independent humanitarian agency with two major goals; providing medical aid wherever needed and raise the awareness of people in need. Information about their work and people in need is found on this website. The national Norwegian part of MSF can be found on: http://www.leger-uten-grenser.no

Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI): The Norwegian Institute of Public Health was established in 2002 and the main goal is to improve the health of the Norwegian population. It focuses on areas like infectious disease control, environmental medicine and epidemiological research.

Reliefweb: Reliefweb serves the latest information on the humanitarian relief community, and gives the latest up-date of humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters, as thorough information of previous ones.

Roll Back Malaria: This is a global partnership with the main goal to halve the global burden of malaria by the year 2010. It gives information on prevention, treatment and control of malaria.

Save the Children: Save the Children works to create a positive change for children through collaboration with their families or communities. This site includes information concerning the situation of the worlds children and the work done in order to help the children in need.

United Nations Population Fund: This UN-site provides information concerning population issues in general, especially those concerning reproductive health, and issues concerning adolescent and youth. It also includes country profiles with statistics and information from each of these

Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD): NORAD provides some information concerning health issues, HIV/AIDS and environmental issues. It contains country profiles on those countries that are cooperating with Norway on development issues, as well as information on the work that are being done as a result of this cooperation.

Birzeit University, Palestine: Home-page of Birzeit University, with links to information resources on Palestine.

Africa News: Reports from Africa’s leading newspapers, magazines and news agencies.

Google News Health: Not only the biggest search engine, but also a news resource.

International Development Research Centre: This web-site of a Canadian Research Centre contains excellent links to International Publishers and Organisations.

Teaching Aids at Low Cost (TALC): Web-site with free and low cost health-related books and teaching aids.

ITDG Publishing: Practical Action Publishing helps to build the skills and capabilities of researchers and practitioners involved in international development through the dissemination of knowledge in a variety of mediums, including books and peer reviewed journals.
