Required specialization
Bachelor's degree
You must have a bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.
Required specialization and minimum grade requirement
You must have a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C in the required specialization. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B and a Second Class Upper in the British system. We do not use conversion tables for foreign grades. All foreign education is individually evaluated during the admission process.
Please note that eligible applicants who fulfill the minimum grade requirement will compete for a study place. Please see the section on ranking for more information on selection criteria.
Required specialization:
Either:
80 ECTS physics and natural sciences, consisting of:
-
60 ECTS credits at bachelor level, which includes the subject areas mechanics, electromagnetism, oscillations and waves, quantum physics, experimental physics, and thermodynamics and statistical physics.

At least 20 ECTS credits natural sciences on advanced bachelor level.
In addition, you must have at least 5 ECTS credits programming from languages such as C/C++/Java/Python/Matlab
The following courses from the University of Oslo will cover the required specialization:
- Either FYS1100 – Mechanics and Modelling (Norwegian only), FYS1105 – Classical Mechanics or FYS-MEK1110 – Mechanics
- FYS1120 – Electromagnetism
- FYS2130 – Waves and oscillations
- Either FYS2140 – Quantum physics or FYS3110 – Quantum mechanics
- Either FYS2150 – Experimental physics, AST2210 – Observational Astronomy or FYS3506– Methods and Instrumentation in Nuclear Physics (new course autumn 2025)
- FYS2160 – Thermodynamics and statistical physics
- 20 ECTS credits natural sciences on advanced bachelor level
- 5 ECTS credits programming from languages such as C/C++/Java/Python/Matlab
When calculating the average for the required specialization, only 60 credits in physics and 20 credits in natural sciences are counted.
Or:
80 ECTS within physics, nuclear sciences and technology and natural sciences, consisting of:
- 10 ECTS quantum physics
- 30 ECTS nuclear science
- 40 ECTS natural sciences, where 20 ECTS must be at advanced bachelor level
The following courses from the University of Oslo will cover the required specialization:
- FYS2140 - Quantum physics
- 3 of the following 4 courses:
- FYS3500 - Introduction to Nuclear and Particle Physics
- FYS3506 - Methods and instrumentation in nuclear physics (new course autumn 2025)
- FYS3535 - Medical Applications of Nuclear Physics
- FYS3580 - Nuclear Technology (new course autumn 2025)
- 40 ECTS natural sciences, where 20 ECTS must be at advanced bachelor level
Or:
80 ECTS within chemistry, mathematics and physics, consisting of:
- 60 ECTS chemistry with laboratory coursework
- 10 ECTS mathematics
- 10 ECTS physics
The following courses from the University of Oslo will cover the required specialization:
- KJM1101 - Generell kjemi
- KJM2400 - Analytical Chemistry I
- 20 ECTS credits within chemistry or material science at advanced undergraduate level (3000 level). The courses BIOS3070 - Biogeochemistry and GEO3100 - Environmental Geology may also be included.
- 20 ECTS unspecified chemistry courses
- 10 ECTS mathematics
- 10 ECTS physics
