How to check if I meet the English language requirement

The English language requirement to studies at bachelor's level (including Norwegian language courses) at Norwegian universities is set by HK-dir (the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education). The requirement is listed in the GSU list (Higher Education Entrance Qualification for Persons with Foreign Education) with more specific information in the language requirement list.

  • Use the GSU list (at HK-dir) to check your country 
    • Choose your country from the drop-down menu.
    • The GSU list will show if the English requirement is covered by your secondary school or higher education.

How to meet the requirement

IELTS Academic - International English Language Testing System or IELTS Online
  • Minimum score: 5.0
  • Upload the official copy of your test result with a legible TRF number in the bottom right corner. The University of Oslo will verify your test result online. It is currently not possible to submit test results with an IELTS institutional code.

  • IELTS test results must not be older than three years. Please make sure that your test result is valid at the time of application.

TOEFL internet based test (IBT) or TOEFL iBT Home Edition
  • Minimum score: 60 points. 
  • Upload a copy of your official Test Taker Score Report. The University of Oslo will verify your test result online.

  • TOEFL test results must not be older than two years. Please make sure that your test result is valid at the time of application.

Cambridge Assessment English exams:
  • First Certificate in English or
  • Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or
  • Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
  • Please upload a copy of your test result.

You must send your results to the International Summer School, University of Oslo (account number 2331) via the Cambridge English Candidate Results Website. Login using your 'ID number' and 'secret number' and click 'Send my result'. In addition, you must upload your Statement of Results to the application portal. 

Pearson PTE Academic
  • Pearson Test of English Academic with a minimum overall score of 51.
  • Pearson Academic Online is also approved.

Send your score report to the University of Oslo through your Pearson account. In addition, upload a PDF of your score report. Please make sure that your test result is valid at the time of application. The University of Oslo will verify your test result online.

Exemptions:

Certain applicants may be exempt from documenting their English proficiency with the IELTS, TOEFL or University of Cambridge exams. All exemptions must be documented.

  • Native speakers from UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia with with English as a subject in their secondary education
  • Applicants who have completed a minimum of one year's university studies equivalent to 60 ECTS in academic subjects in UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia . Please note that branch campus and distance learning students are not exempt.
  • Applicants who have a complete or incomplete undergraduate degree in English language and literature with courses in English language and literature that are equivalent to minimum 60 ECTS.
  • Applicants who have completed a Master's degree taught in English (language of instruction must be documented).
  • Students with International Baccalaureate (IB) education with HL or SL English with a minimum grade of 3.
  • Completed and passed English course (140 hours per year / 5 hours per week) at a Norwegian upper secondary school
  • Students with secondary education from Hungary: English is covered if one has passed exam in English in ?rettségi Bizonyítvány (after 2005). 
  • Exemptions for Bachelor's level courses, see GSU-list.
  • Other exemptions will not be allowed.

Applicants to Master's courses

IELTS Academic - International English Language Testing System or IELTS Online
  • Minimum overall band score of 6.5 with at least 6.5 in each component.
  • Upload the official copy of your test result with a legible TRF number in the bottom right corner. The University of Oslo will verify your test result online. It is currently not possible to submit test results with an IELTS institutional code.
  • IELTS test results must not be older than two years. Please make sure that your test result is valid at the time of application.
TOEFL iBT
  • Minimum total score of 90 with at least 19 in reading, 20 in listening, 20 in speaking and 24 in writing. 
    This includes TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition.
  • Upload a copy of your official Test Taker Score Report. The University of Oslo will verify your test result online.

  • TOEFL test results must not be older than two years. Please make sure that your test result is valid at the time of application.

Cambridge Assessment English exams:

Applicants who, in 2005 or later, have passed the University of Cambridge exams 

  • C2 Proficiency (formerly known as Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)), with the grades A, B or C
  • C1 Advanced (formerly known as Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)) with the grades A, B or C
  • B2 First (formerly known as Cambridge English: First (FCE)) with the grade A

      Pearson
      • PTE Academic - Pearson Test of English Academic

      Exemptions

      Certain applicants may be exempt from documenting their English proficiency with the IELTS, TOEFL or University of Cambridge exams. All exemptions must be documented.

      The following applicants are exempt from submitting an English language test: 

      Norwegian upper secondary school

      Applicants who have passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) with a minimum grade of 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or passed "programfag" in English (140 hours) from Norwegian upper secondary school.

      International Baccalaureate (IB)

      Applicants who have completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme with English at Higher Level (HL) with the minimum score of 4 or English at Standard Level (SL) with the minimum score of 6.

      Country specific exemptions:

      Antigua and Barbuda

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in the Antigua and Barbuda. 

      Australia

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Australia, or a minimum of one year's university studies equivalent to 60 ECTS in academic subjects with English as the language of instruction in Australia.

      Bahamas

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in the Bahamas.

      Barbados

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Barbados.

      Belize

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Belize. 

      Canada

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Canada, or a minimum of one year's university studies in academic subjects equivalent to 60 ECTS with English as the language of instruction in Canada.

      Denmark

      Applicants who have:

      • passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) with a minimum grade of 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or passed "programfag" in English (140 hours) from Norwegian upper secondary school.

      OR

      • completed one the following with English as the language of instruction in Denmark:
        • a bachelor's degree
        • a minimum of one year of master's degree studies. The study level and language of instruction must be documented with a diploma supplement or a statement from your university, if it is not clear from your official transcript of records that your completed courses were taught in English at master's level.

      Dominica

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary school in English in Dominica. 

      Fiji

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary school in English in Fiji.

      Finland

      Applicants who have:

      • passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) with a minimum grade of 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or passed "programfag" in English (140 hours) from Norwegian upper secondary school.

      OR

      • completed one of the following with English as the language of instruction in Finland:
        • a bachelor's degree
        • a minimum of one year of master's degree studies. The study level and language of instruction must be documented with a diploma supplement or a statement from your university, if it is not clear from your official transcript of records that your completed courses were taught in English at master's level.

      Grenada

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Grenada. 

      Guyana

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Guyana.

      Hong Kong

      Applicants with completed upper secondary school from Hong Kong with an AS-level examination in Use of English with grades A-C or HKDSE English Language Subject Level grade 5.

      Iceland

      Applicants who have:

      • passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) with a minimum grade of 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or passed "programfag" in English (140 hours) from Norwegian upper secondary school.

      OR

      • completed one of the following with English as the language of instruction in Iceland:
        • a bachelor's degree
        • a minimum of one year of master's degree studies. The study level and language of instruction must be documented with a diploma supplement or a statement from your university, if it is not clear from your official transcript of records that your completed courses were taught in English at master's level.

      Ireland

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Ireland, or a minimum of one year's university studies in academic subjects equivalent to 60 ECTS with English as the language of instruction in Ireland.

      Jamaica

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Jamaica.

      Macao

      Applicants with completed upper secondary school within the British system in Macao.

      Malta

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Malta.

      Mauritius

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary school in English in Mauritius.

      The Netherlands

      Applicants who have

      • completed the subject “Engelse taal en literatuur” from VWO, with the minimum final grade (eindcijfer) of 6, or from HAVO, with the minimum final grade (eindcijfer) of 7.

      OR

      • completed one the following with English as the language of instruction in the Netherlands:
        • a bachelor's degree
        • a minimum of one year of master's degree studies equivalent to 60 ECTS. The study level and language of instruction must be documented with a diploma supplement or a statement from your university, if it is not clear from your official transcript of records that your completed courses were taught in English at master's level.

      New Zealand

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in New Zealand, or a minimum of one year's university studies in academic subjects equivalent to 60 ECTS with English as the language of instruction in New Zealand.

      Norway

      Applicants who have:

      • passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) with a minimum grade of 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or passed "programfag" in English (140 hours) from Norwegian upper secondary school.

      OR

      • completed one of the following with English as the language of instruction in Norway:
        • a bachelor's degree
        • a minimum of one year of master's degree studies. The study level and language of instruction must be documented with a diploma supplement or a statement from your university, if it is not clear from your official transcript of records that your completed courses were taught in English at master's level.

      Samoa

      Applicants who have their entire upper secondary school in English in Samoa.

      Saint Lucia

      Applicants who have their entire upper secondary school in English in Saint Lucia. 

      Singapore

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Singapore.

      South Africa

      Applicants who have completed both upper secondary school and an honours bachelor’s degree taught in English in South Africa.

      Sweden

      Applicants who have:

      • passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) with a minimum grade of 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or passed "programfag" in English (140 hours) from Norwegian upper secondary school.

      OR

      • completed one of the following with English as the language of instruction in Sweden:
        • a bachelor's degree
        • a minimum of one year of master's degree studies. The study level and language of instruction must be documented with a diploma supplement or a statement from your university, if it is not clear from your official transcript of records that your completed courses were taught in English at master's level.

      Trinidad and Tobago

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in Trinidad and Tobago.

      United Kingdom

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in the United Kingdom, or a minimum of one year's university studies in academic subjects equivalent to 60 ECTS with English as the language of instruction in the United Kingdom. Please note that UK branch campus, validated and franchised programme and distance learning students are not exempt.

      USA

      Applicants who have completed their entire upper secondary education in the USA, or a minimum of one year's university studies in academic subjects equivalent to 60 ECTS (30 semester credits or 45 quarter credits) with English as the language of instruction in the USA.
