Abstract
In modern games, sound design is far more than mere background noise—it conveys a story and shapes entire worlds. From the haunting echoes of a dark cavern to the satisfying chime of a completed quest, sound plays a magical role in building immersion. And sometimes, it might even send a chill down your spine… like the soft, eerie footsteps of a vampire lurking in the shadows.
We will explore how gamification principles—interaction, feedback, progression, challenge, exploration, and motivation—integrate with sound design techniques such as spatial audio, adaptive mixing, and procedural audio to create responsive audio environments. Practical aspects of implementing game audio will be discussed within Unity (and Wwise).
Whether you’re into interactive media, a game developer, a sound designer, or simply fascinated by how games sound so real, this talk will reveal how they do it! ;)

Maham Riaz is a doctoral research fellow at RITMO, where she is working on the AMBIENT project. With a passion for music and technology, her research focuses on the interaction between auditory-visual rhythms and the human body, using techniques such as ambisonics and motion capture. She seeks to explore how indoor environments influence us. Maham also enjoys creating and working with interactive objects designed to trigger specific sensory responses.
In addition to her research, she has a particular affinity for the storytelling potential of sound, often drawing knowledge from digital animation, film, games, and other audiovisual media and applying it to her own projects. Her work evokes an atmosphere as intriguing as a vampire’s world after dark.
