FIL2105 – Metaphysics/Philosophy of Mind

Course content
This course delves more deeply into some of the central themes in Metaphysics and the Philosophy of Mind. There will be two variants, each focussing on a set of core issues within these areas:
- One variant will concentrate on the marks of the mental, and will, among other things, focus on different approaches to the question of the various kind of mental content, including sensory qualities and the contents of thought and other so-called propositional attitudes.
- Another variant will focus on what kind of theory we can have of the nature of consciousness, on how consciousness can exist in the physical world, as well as how various philosophical views of consciousness are related to the different approaches of the special sciences.
Learning outcome
The aim is to give the participants:
- an in-depth knowledge of some central issues in Metaphysics and the Philosophy of Mind
- the ability critically to evaluate different philosophical views on the topics covered
- the ability to express themselves in academic forms, both orally and in writing.
Admission

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
A basic knowledge in metaphysics and philosophy of mind
Overlapping courses
- 5 credits overlap with FIL2100 – Fordypning - Metafysikk (discontinued)
- 5 credits overlap with FIL2101 – Fordypning - Bevissthetsfilosofi (discontinued)
Teaching
24 hours of seminars and lectures.
Compulsory tuition activities:
- Written assignment of 3-4 pages which you submit in Canvas.
- An oral presentation
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, your essay must be approved (accepted as satisfactory) by the teacher.
The compulsory activities are only valid the semester you complete the course.

Examination
A term paper of approximately 10 pages (exclusive of bibliography and references).
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.
You submit your exam in Inspera.
When you write an essay you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. This however requires that you submit a the obligatory draft to your teacher.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
