KOS4901 – Internship in advanced language teaching 2

Course content

This course is designed as a one-semester follow-up to the course KOS4900 – Internship in advanced language teaching 1, in order to provide master students in foreign language teaching at other universities with a full year of practice as an intern.

The course offers you a further opportunity for fulfilling your local study program’s demand for a practice period as an intern. It provides you with closely supervised training and practice in an intensive language study program, with pedagogical tutoring by highly experienced teachers within the language in question. You will be actively involved in several aspects of the teaching process, such as oral conversation, written exercises, reading comprehension training, guidance and supervision, the use of AI and other digital tools in language teaching, course planning, as well as the giving and grading of mock exams and exams. You will be supervised by the teacher in charge of each individual course to which you contribute, in addition to one local teacher who will act as your main contact person.

Your work must be equivalent to 300 work hours spread throughout the semester. Your tasks should be relevant to your master studies in your home university, as well as your future work as a language teacher. The content of your work should be beneficial to both you and the students.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you will:

  • Develop teaching competence, analytical skills, and capacity to evaluate and choose among different designs and methods of language teaching.

  • Learn about different aspects of the teaching process and develop a broader understanding of practical language teaching.

  • Develop skills that prepare you for future jobs as a language teacher.

Admission to the course

This course is only available for you who are enrolled in a master program in foreign language teaching at institutions with which the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages at the University of Oslo has a relevant exchange agreement. Formal prerequisite knowledge

Bachelor’s Degree or Cand. Mag. Degree or equivalent recognised education.

Documentation of proficiency in English:

  • IELTS academic - International English Language Testing System with minimum score: 6.5.

or

  • TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test (iBT) with minimum score: 90.

This includes TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.

Additionally, you must have studied for a minimum of one semester at the Master’s Degree level.

Teaching

You will sometimes work independently with the students on the seminars you are responsible for, at other times in close collaboration with the local teachers. In either case, continuous contact with the supervising teacher(s) is essential and obligatory.

All compulsory activities must be approved to qualify for the exam. It is your responsibility to verify that you have obtained approval for all compulsory activities.?

It is important that you familiarize yourself with the rules regarding absence from compulsory activities, to prevent being excluded from teaching and losing your eligibility to take the exam.?

Examination

Term paper and oral exam.

The examination consists of a term paper of 20 pages followed by an oral exam. The term paper should sum up what you have learned during the semester and put it in an academic and theoretical context. The oral exam is a 15-minute powerpoint presentation of the term paper, followed by a 15 minute discussion session. The written works produced in this course may not be used in other submissions.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
