LING3090 – Bachelor's Degree Thesis in Linguistics

Course content

This course provides research-based training in academic writing. The concrete final result is a BA thesis of approx. 10 pages. The course will start from an overarching research topic decided by the instructor (see link to semester page on the right). The specific topic of each participant’s assignment is decided in consultation with the course instructor(s) who will be in charge of the course during the current semester. You will receive supervision with regards to your own topic, the research process, suitable academic literature, and how to write a BA thesis. The topic of your BA thesis must be approved by the course instructor(s).

Learning outcome

In this course, you will learn to carry out your own independent research, using the concepts, research methods and theories that you have encountered in the course of your studies in linguistics. You will learn to choose and refine a topic, and to investigate this topic in an appropriate academic approach. You will learn to formulate research questions and hypotheses, and how to empirically investigate them. Furthermore, you will learn to find relevant literature, and to master the proper use of sources, references and quotations.

The final grade reflects the degree to which a student has achieved the learning outcomes for the course.

Teaching

This course has 14 double hours of student-oriented research-based teaching. In the classes, we will take up linguistic research methodology (e.g. corpus studies) and the writing of a scientific text. There will be an overarching research topic for the class, which is set by the instructors and which will be broad enough to accommodate different approaches in accordance with each student’s individual research interests. We start by discussing possible research questions for each student’s BA thesis and about suitable methodology for investigating these questions. Supervision is then given in the form of discussion and feedback from the instructor and fellow students in classes.

A typical session (double hour) will involve students presenting various stages of their ongoing research (e.g., research question, data collection, presenting results) to receive in-depth feedback and guidance from the instructor(s) with opportunity for immediate discussion / peer feedback amongst the students.

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Written term paper with 10 pages (à 2300 characters no spaces).

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
