Course content
This is a higher intermediate level language course for international students. The course builds on skills and knowledge acquired in NORINT0120 or the equivalent. A passing mark in NORINT0130 meets the Norwegian language requirements for Faculty admission at Norwegian universities and university colleges. For some professional authorizations (eg. dentists, medical doctors) other requirements may be in place.
In class, oral activities will be in focus as well as a further development of the students writing skills. The students will be working with a selection of freestanding oral and/or written literature and articles on subjects like the multicultural society, environment and climate. This to develop a higher degree of language proficiency as well as to prepare the students for further studies or a professional career where Norwegian is the working language.
This is a proficiency course with a final examination.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, the students will
- be able to master Norwegian at a level where they can study at Norwegian universities or university colleges along Norwegian students, with Norwegian language lecturers and literature
- be able to follow lectures and take notes, understand radio and television programs and other types of oral presentations
- be able to actively and independently participate in seminars, conversations and discussions, to express themselves in an easy to understand manner, as well as understanding others
- be able give referential, descriptive and argumentative presentations in writing, as well as master the main rules for effective textual composition
- be able express themselves with a certain degree of accuracy
- have knowledge of some common forms of writing
- be able to read academic literature, factual prose, newspapers and other authentic material without any special difficulties
- have a vocabulary suitable to express their independent opinions, develop arguments and convey knowledge on subjects discussed during the course
The final mark will show to what extent the student has attained the intended learning outcome for the subject.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
It is assumed that students have Higher education entrance qualification with the exception of Norwegian language skills, and that they have passed NORINT0120 – Norwegian for International Students, Level 2, Level 2 or the equivalent with the grade D or better on both the written and oral exam.

Teaching
This course has eight hours seminar teaching per week for 14 weeks (112 hours in total), and two hours grammar lectures per week for 11 weeks (22 hours in total).
The seminar teaching requires active student participation and students will be given written and/or oral assignments every week.
The seminar teaching has mandatory attendance. The grammar lectures are not mandatory.
Before the student can sit for the exam, the following compulsory activities must be approved by the teacher:
- 75 % attendance in the seminar teaching (84 hours)
- Qualifying task in the form of an oral presentation
- Qualifying task in the form of a written presentation
Access to teaching
If you have completed compulsory instruction and have had this approved, you are not entitled to repeat that instruction. If you have been admitted to the course, but have not completed compulsory instruction or had this approved, you are entitled to new instruction permitting available capacity.
Examination
The exam consists of a 4-hour written school exam and an oral examination. The written and oral parts account for 50 % of the final grade each. Both the written and oral exams must be passed in the same semester.
Before the student can sit for the exam, the compulsory activities must be approved.
Approved compulsory activities are valid for the next two terms in which the course is offered.

Examination support material
No support material is allowed during the final examinations.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian, and you submit your response in Norwegian.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
