ENG4410 – Genre Studies
Course description
Course content
The courses under this heading (ENG4411-ENG4419) study the characteristics and/or development of a genre or subgenre. In addition to having a theoretical component, these courses focus on literary texts and aim to develop analytical and critical tools that are useful in the student’s encounter with these texts. Texts are chosen from works that invite and richly repay academic study.
Themes that fall under this heading include ENG4411 – American Drama Between the Wars (discontinued) and ENG4412 – Travel Literature in English; other possible themes may be The Early English Novel, Fantasy Literature and Parody.
Learning outcome
To acquire extensive knowledge about the genre and topic studied. To develop the ability to analyse texts within their social, political and cultural context.
Admission

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the master program in literature, LAP or other suitable master programs.
Teaching
Seminar, two hours per week for ten weeks. Regular attendance and active participation is required, e.g. in the form of one or more oral presentations.
Examination
A term paper of 10 standard pages (topic to be decided between teacher and student).

Language of examination
English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Marks will be published on Studentweb no later than three weeks after the submission date/exam.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
