FRM4110 – Applied statistics for pharmacists

Course content
The course will provide an introduction to applied statistics - how numbers and data are organised and understood, and how conclusions can be drawn from them.
Learning outcome
Students will learn the important methods of describing and understanding data, gain knowledge about probability distributions, and learn to apply various methods for the statistical analysis of data. Amongst other things, students will learn how to estimate confidence intervals, test hypotheses and interpret P values. Both parametric and non-parametric methods will be examined. In addition, students will learn about regression analysis and a little about experimental design. After completing the course, students will be equipped to carry out simple statistical analyses and be able to understand and interpret the results.
Admission to the course
The course is only available to students who have passed their pharmacy apprenticeship and have an approved study plan for the 2.dept. of the master programme and have passed all previous pharmacy courses.
The course can be available to other master- or ph.d-students if it is relevant.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
No requirements beyond the admission requirements for the 5 year Integrated master program in Pharmacy.

- 10 credits overlap with STK1000 – Introduction to Applied Statistics.
- 10 credits overlap with STK1005 – Introduction to applied statisics B (discontinued).
- 8 credits overlap with FARM4130 – Applied Statistics for Pharmacists.
Teaching
The course includes lectures, group work and excercises in statistics in a computer room.
Obligatory excercises in statistics need to be approved in order for the student to be eligible to take the written exam.
Inactivity and / or excessive absences in compulsory education means that the student does not receive final assessment / examination.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
A four hour written exam.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
It will also be counted as one of the three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:
- STK1000 – Introduction to Applied Statistics
- STK1005 – Introduction to applied statisics B (discontinued)
Examination support material
As of 1 August, 2016, the use of own calculators is no longer permitted. Casio FX-991EX calculators are handed out to all exam candidates at the beginning of the exam.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
