FRM4720 – Drug and clinical toxicology

Course content
The course comprises 3 main elements: (1) General toxicology particular relevant for medicinal products, (2) evaluation of drug toxicology (general toxicity, reproduction toxicity, gene toxicity, carcinogenicity, human toxicological assessment and toxicosurveillance) and (3) clinical toxicology of drugs and some essential chemicals (toxic doses, diagnosis and treatment including use of antidotes.
Learning outcome
After the course the students shall have the necessary knowledge and understanding of basic toxicology (including toxicokinetics) relevant for drugs, and the principles for toxicological testing of new drugs and toxicological follow-up of drugs alredy on the marked. In addition, the students shall know the most usual acute-toxic drugs and chemicals, poisoning symptoms, treatments and antidotes.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Completed the basic part on the pharmacy study or equivalent relevant courses.
Recommended previous knowledge
The teaching is based on the courses PBF251 and PBF252 (old study plan) or FRM1210 – Medical substances and how they work (discontinued) and FRM2410 – Drug formulation and the use of drugs (discontinued) (new study plan).
Teaching
Lectures, group work and self study within 2-3 months in the spring semester.
Examination
Usually written examination (4 hours). Evaluation based on the letter system (A-F). If few students oral emanations will be considered.
