FYS3250 – Electromagnetic waves with applications

Course content

Simple harmonic waves in time and propagation along transmission lines in slab waveguides and in metallic and dielectric waveguides (optical fibres). Phase and group velocity, dispersion. Spectrum, pulse broadening. Polarisation. Electromagnetic waves in free space, plane waves, cylindrical and spherical waves. Antennas, lasers.

Learning outcome

A fundamental understanding of electromagnetic waves, for applications in communications (mobile, satellite and optical), radar, remote sensing, laser and sensor technology.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Read more about fulfilling special requirements.

Recommended previous knowledge

FYS1120 – Electromagnetism, FYS2130 – Oscillations and Waves, MAT1100 – Calculus, MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra and MAT1120 – Linear Algebra.

Overlapping courses

10 credits overlap against FYS206.

Teaching

A one-semester course, with a schedule of 6 hours per week. Homework problems, both traditional numeric and algebraic excercises, and problems requiring the application of mathematical and graphical software.

Examination

The final grade will be based on a 2-hour written midterm exam with approx. 40% weight (medio March) and a final 3-hour written exam with approx. 60% weight (primo June). Letter grade.

Allowed aids: The textbook which is used in the course. Approved calculator. ?grim and Lian: "Fysiske st?rrelser og enheter". Rottman: "Matematisk formelsamling".
