Course content

Course content will vary depending upon the actual project chosen by the supervisor. All graduate research topics do include a literature search and writing of a scientific report. The course offers a detailed project description that includes the problem, specified academic training and milestones and a list of background literature. Some but not all students will perform independent practical research and/or theoretical calculations in the chosen topic.The project is a subtask of ongoing research activities in the group and the student will be an integrated member of a project team.

Learning outcome

The student shall obtain an in depth understanding of the chosen topic in Physics. The student will be competent in planning and executing a project as well as be trained in how to write a scientific report. The student will learn to work as part of an international team.

Recommended previous knowledge

Students are advised to have a solid basis within the field of study for the research project and have a level of knowledge comparable to last year of a Norwegian Bachelor`s degree or first year of a Norwegian Master`s degree.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Oral examination covering both the field of topic and the report.
There will be a thorough written evaluation of the report. Grading will be passed/failed. If the result is failed, the student may submit a revised project report within 6 weeks.
