FYS4780 – Analysis of dynamical image information for medical diagnostics
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Dynamical image analysis is of growing importance in medical diagnostics. Exploiting imaging of processes which are changing as a function of time, many functional parameters not directly available by static imaging may be estimated. This course will provide an introduction to dynamical image analysis within MRI, CT and PET. The goal is to make available for the students a comprehensive introduction to which functional parameters can be measured using these image-forming modalities, and the theoretical models basic for relevant image analyses. Upon completing the course, the students should possess knowledge to all steps involved in advanced dynamical analysis of MRI, CT- and PET-based medical image data.
Learning outcome
The lectures will cover general aspects of image formats, preprocessing and modeling. In addition, modality-specific recording techniques, image treatments, analysis,
post-processing and visualization will be discussed in some detail.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
Basic knowledge to MATLAB is expected (the labs will be MATLAB-based). It may be advantageous to have taken (in advance or in parallel) the modality-specific courses in MR (FYS-KJM4740) and CT (FYS4760), but this is no requirement.
Teaching
There will be 2 hours of lectures each week (spring term only) for 18 weeks. Labs will be spread over the entire term, each with an estimated duration of 4 – 6 hours. Up to 4 compulsory labs may be given the students. There may be additional compulsory papers or exercises.
Examination
Lab-reports and compulsory deliveries must have been graded as ‘Accepted’ prior to the final exam. The final exam is written, 3 hours duration. Letter grading (A – F, F is fail).
Examination support material
Allowed aids: Matematiske og fysiske tabeller for videreg?ende skole. ?grim og Lian "Fysiske st?rrelser og enheter". Rottman: "Matematisk formelsamling". Approved electronical calculator.
For detailed information about examinations at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences please see http://www.matnat.uio.no/english/studies/index.html
Language of examination
Norwegian exam text, eventually English in addition, if necessary.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
