FYS9630 – Transport of radiation in the atmosphere
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
An introduction to the theory of radiation transport in multiple scattering, absorbing and emitting atmospheres. General solutions of the radiation transport equation. Two-stream approximations and discrete ordinate method. Applications on problems from the earth's atmosphere. Introduction to the use of a modern radiation model.
Learning outcome
To get a basic introduction to the theory of scattering, absorption and emission of electromagnetic radiation in atmospheres, and an introduction to an existing radiation transport model with applications on for example the analysis of data from the UV, visible and IR area.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra, MAT-INF1100 – Modelling and Computations (discontinued), FYS1120 – Electromagnetism, FYS2130 – Oscillations and Waves
Overlapping courses
10 credits with FYS4630 – Transport of radiation in the atmosphere (discontinued)
Teaching
The course extends over a full semester with 4 hours of teaching (lectures and colloquia) per week.
