GEO4160 – Fate and transport of organic contaminants in the environment

Course content

Contaminants in soils and ground water pose a threat to our society. The course will cover:

  • Types of contaminants
  • Physical/chemical distribution among phases/media
  • Biogeochemical processes in soils and groundwater
  • Transport of contaminants
  • Laboratory experiments
  • Computer exercises

Learning outcome

To give students the knowledge and experience to evaluate the fate of various kinds of contaminants in soils and groundwater. They should be able to quantify their phase/media distribution, their binding, degradation and transport, and provide the basis for any remediation reaction.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic knowledge in chemistry, biology and geosciences

Overlapping courses

10 credits overlap with GEO4161 – Contaminants in the Geoenvironment

Teaching

The course covers 70 hours of lectures/seminars/computer labs. Participation in tutorial groups is compulsory and oral and written assignments will be given. Students will interact both through colloquia groups and through a web-based classroom.

Examination

A written project assignment will be graded A-F (counts 100% of total grade).
