GEO4220 – Depositional environments and biostratigraphy
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
In this course you will gain basic understanding of the major environments of deposition, sediment characterization and stratigraphical principles, mainly bio- and sequence stratigraphy. The practicals will demonstrate different case histories.
Learning outcome
During the course you will:
- learn the principles of particle formation, erosion, transport and deposition, with particular emphasis on allogenic and autogenic factors.
- understand the formation and characterization of the main sedimentary facies
- learn the basics of paleontological analyzes
- compile paleontological and stratigraphical results, sedimentary logs and well logs and in integrated assessments of depositional environments.
- be able to perform their own, independent facies analysis.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is based on sedimentological knowledge compatible to the book by Boggs (2014, 5th edition)
Overlapping courses
- 5 credits overlap with GEO4216 – Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy
- 10 credits overlap with GEO9220 – Depositional Environments and Stratigraphy (discontinued)
Teaching
Lectures and seminars and exercises (8 hours per week). Mandatory reports from the exercises.
Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Studies administration, email address: studieinfo@geo.uio.no
Examination
A midterm exam, which is either oral or written, counting 30%. Final written exam (3 hours), counts 70%. Both exam parts must be passed in order to pass the course.
Language of examination
In this course any written exam questions or assignment questions may be available in English only.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
Special examination arrangements
Application form, deadline and requirements for special examination arrangements.
Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
This course was periodic evaluated in autumn 2013 (pdf, in Norwegian).
