BIOS9111 – Electron Microscopy
Course description
Course content
The course provides an introduction into using electron microscopic technology (EM), and includes both Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Learning outcome
The course will provide students with knowledge and information towards the most general EM-techniques and the relevant areas they are presently used. Students will be required to practise the methods and use the instruments, proving them with a basis for future studies and research assignments. Students must have additional experience to become authorised users of the microscopes, and this will be provided when needed.
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

The courses BIOS5111?and BIOS9111?have common admission. Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:
- PhD candidates and master students at the MN faculty who have the course as part of the approved curriculum.
- Other PhD candidates and visiting PhD candidates.
- Students with admission to single courses on master’s level and exchange students
- Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc. If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally

Examination
Final oral exam appr. one week after the end of the course.
An individual laboratory report must be handed in an be approved to be eligible for the final exam.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:BIOS5111 – Electron Microscopy, MBV4110 – Electron microscopy (continued), MBV9110 – Electron microscopy (continued).

Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
