IN9010 – Design, Technology and Society

Course content
In this course we explore the relations between technology and society, with a focus on the ethical, political, and sustainability dimensions of technology and how these, in turn, intersect with society. We explore in particular the linkages between design, technological change, and current societal challenges, such as artificial intelligence, climate change, digitalisation, inequality, privacy, surveillance, and intersectionality.
The basic assumption in this course is that we, as technology developers, designers, and innovators, contribute to the making of the future of our communities and planet. We will explore this role critically and creatively, working with practical examples, discussions, documentaries, and hands-on workshops.
Learning outcome
After this course you will be able to:
- understand the complexity of the relations between technology and society
- discuss social, environmental, and ethical challenges in technology design and use
- present your perspective on the ethical responsibility of the information technology developer, designer or innovator
- engage in critical and reflexive discussions of new and emerging information
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through?Studentweb. If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must?apply for a position as a visiting student?within a given deadline.
IN5010 and IN9010?will be assessed together in regards to?the number of admissions, with?priority given to PhD candidates with IN9010 in an approved study plan.

- 10 credits overlap with INF5011 – Technology Society Ethics (continued).
- 10 credits overlap with INF9011 – Science technology society ethics (continued).
Teaching
3 hours of lectures per week through the spring semester.
There are three mandatory assignments:
1. 80% participation
2. two presentations (group assignments):
3. presentation of final project (group assignment):
Examination
The exam consists of an oral group exam. All mandatory assignments must be approved before you can take the exam.
It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: IN5010 – Design, teknologi og samfunn, INF5011 – Technology Society Ethics (continued), INF9011 – Science technology society ethics (continued)
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
