INF5370 – Distributed technologies for social networks
Course description
Course content
We are witnessing revolutionary changes in the Internet related to the proliferation of social networking services. While these services cross many areas of computer science, we will try to consider them from the perspective of distributed computing. This research oriented seminar explores state-of-the art advances, principles, and techniques in the area. In particular, the seminar covers
- Online social networking (such as Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter).
- Mobile social networking (including sensornet services and delay tolerant networks)
- Analysis of data and relations in social networks
- Selected aspects of content distribution services
Incentives in social networks and in content distribution
P2P streaming and its use in social networks
Dissemination schemes for social content
Learning outcome
- Learning about research advances related to one of the most popular technological areas today.
- Getting experience of reviewing and summarizing research papers and presentations.
- Getting experience of participating in research discussions with peers.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.
15 students can be admitted. The students will be prioritized as followed:
1) Phd students at the Department of Informatics with INF9370 on their approved study plan.
2) Master students at the Department of Informatics with INF5370 on their approved study plan.
3) Master/PhD students at the Department of Informatics.
4) Other qualified students.
Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Teaching
Seminar, 3 hours each week. It will be structured as presentations of the most significant research works in this popular area and discussion of these works.
This course is a seminar, and each student must give a presentation. The students are also expected to participate in the discussions. To be allowed to take the final exam, each student must attend at least 75% of the seminar meetings, and prior to each of these meetings, he or she must read the articles to be discussed and submit a short written summary of these articles.
Examination
- 50 % oral exam
- 50 % student presentations
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It is strongly recommended to attend the first lecture since it will be given important information.
