Course content
In this course you will learn modular web development using open source tools, frameworks and methodologies.
Learning outcome
After this course you will
- have a good understanding of how to develop software in a team with other developers
- be able to develop web-enabled software using open source tools (such as HTML5, JavaScript and modern web frameworks) and methodologies
- have a good understanding of information system architectures, software platforms, and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
- have an understanding of intellectual property rights, open source licensing, and the implications of using open source tools in developing web-enabled software
- be able to participate in developing DHIS2, one of the largest health information systems in the world

Teaching
2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of assignment training per week. Mandatory assignments must be completed during the course. Rules for mandatory assignmnets.
The course explores free and open source software, partly through lectures, but mainly through active participation (programming) in realistic setting. Student will work primarily with a group project, and there might be opportunities for linking up with international partners (e.g. in Asia or Africa) for distributed development of open source applications.
Note that the first lecture is mandatory.
Examination
Group project-work, deliverables and written digital exam. All parts must be approved/passed.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
Other
It is strongly recommended to attend the first lecture since it will be given important information.
