INF9590 – Advancements in interaction design
Course description
Course content
The course approaches interaction design as a multidisciplinary field, emphasizing how information can be presented in many ways providing very different interactions. The course is designed as a two-part module. The first module discusses screen-based interactions, tangible interactions, ubiquitous interactions (sensor based), sound and robot interactions. The second part is based on a full time participation in a four week module in Interaction Design developed in cooperation with the School of Architecture and Design in Oslo (AHO).
Learning outcome
In the first module, students will get to experience multiple modalities of interaction design and learn what each of them involves through a full day of workshops and lectures. In the second module, students will experience the way in which the School of Architecture and Design educates their master’s students in interaction design. The work in that module is typically a professional work related to a real projects from industry.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.
6 students can be admitted. Both Phd.- and master students will be prioritized as followed:
1) Phd students at the Department of Informatics with INF9590 on their approved study plan and having passed INF4260 or equivalent.
2) Master students at the Department of Informatics with INF5590 on their approved study plan and having passed INF4260 or equivalent.
3) Master/PhD students at the Department of Informatics and having passed INF4260 or equivalent.
4) Master/PhD students at the Department of Informatics
5) Other qualified students
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
INF1500 – Introduksjon til design, bruk, interaksjon (continued) and INF1510 – Bruksorientert design (continued)
Strongly recommended: INF4260 – Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) (discontinued) or INF2260 – Interaksjonsdesign (discontinued)
Overlapping courses
10 credits overlap with INF5590 – Advancements in interaction design (continued)
Teaching
The teaching is divided in two modules:
1) The first module will be taught once a week for 4 hours
- A short overview followed by a lecture
- Students will then participate in 2-3 hours workshop, using a specific user interface (one week with tangible interfaces, next with sensors etc.) to design simple interactions.
- The workshop will be followed by a summary of experiences and techniques that were learned that day.
2) The second module will be following the teaching modality of the School of Architecture
Note that the second module implies full time involvement in the four weeks it takes place.
Candidates on the Ph.d-version of this course will be given extra curriculum and must write an essay (5-8 pages).
Examination
- individual written report
- oral presentation of exhibited work
The mandatory assignments must be approved prior the exam.
Both modules must be completed and approved in the same semester.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
This subject does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. For general information about new examination, see /studier/admin/eksamen/sykdom-utsatt/mn/index.html and /english/studies/admin/examinations/new-exam/index.html
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
Special examination arrangements
