ITSLP1100 – Introduction to Cognitive Sciences

Course content

The course gives an overview of the cognitive sciences and their interconnections. 'Cognitive sciences' is here meant to include psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, logic, computer science and artificial intelligence. The course will attend especially to philosophical questions concerning man and machine: What distinguishes a human being from a machine? To what extent can models from computer science serve to describe human thinking and consciousness?

Learning outcome

The student should be able to explain what characterises the cognitive sciences in general, and which problems arise in the interface between the various disciplines.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

EXPHIL03 – Examen Philosophicum

In addition, having background from one of the cognitive sciences (psychology, linguistics, informatics or philosophy), can be an advantage.

Teaching

2 hours of lectures and two hours of group work per week.

There are mandatory assignments and oral seminar presentations which must be passed in order to take the final exam.

Examination

A 3 hour written exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

This subject offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. Note that the first lecture is mandatory.

The subject is regarded equal to HUMIT1760, HUMIT1760MN and EXFAC03-IT when practicing exam regulations
