UNIK9380 – Photonic crystals
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Photonic crystals in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions
1D: Planar dielectric multilayer films, planar diffraction gratings, fiber Bragg gratings.
2D: Planar films with 2D patterns, holey fibers.
3D: Photonic crystal structures with a photonic band gap Bloch waves in one, two, and three dimensions. Brillouin zones, band diagrams. Numerical methods for Bloch waves. Evanescent waves, mode expansions of electromagnetic waves in Bloch waves. Crystal defects.
Applications of photonic crystals in biosensors and solar cells.
Learning outcome
To gain a fundamental understanding of electromagnetic waves in periodic structures. An overview of applications of photonic crystals in optical micro- and nanostructures, and in photonics in general.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is intended for Ph.D. students with a master degree in physics or physical electronics, working in the fields of optics or photonics.
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with UNIK4380 – Photonic crystals (continued)
- 10 credits overlap with TEK9400 – Nanophotonics (discontinued)
- 10 credits overlap with TEK5400 – Nanophotonics (discontinued)
Teaching
A one-semester course, 3 hours classroom work per week. Homework using mathematical software. The students must also read journal papers and discuss in class.
Examination
Oral examination in the end of the semester. If there are many candidates, a written examination can be held in stead.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
This course offers both postponed and resit of examination. Read more:
