KJM5200 – Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Relationships between organic chemical structures and their reactivity. Studies of reaction mechanisms in addition, elimination, substitution, and rearrangement reactions, including pericyclic and photochemical reactions.
Learning outcome
When you have completed this course, you:
- can predict and account for the most commonly encountered reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry.
- can communicate recent findings in the field.
Admission to the course
Students admitted at UiO must?apply for courses?in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about?admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Recommended previous knowledge
KJM1111 – Organic Chemistry I?or equivalent courses.
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with KJM9200 – Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry.
- 9 credits overlap with KJ322.
Teaching
The course duration is one semester. The teaching?consists of:
- 30 hours of lectures and
- 10 hours of exercises.
It is mandatory to attend the first lecture (including students on the waiting list). If you are unable to attend the first lecture, you must notify the Department of Chemistry before the start of the lecture, otherwise your course registration will be cancelled.
Within August 10th / January 10th, international students must inform the student administration at Department of Chemistry?if English teaching is requested.
Examination
- Final written?(4 hours) or oral exam, which?counts 100 % towards the final grade.
The exam form will be decided by the number of participants?after the start of the semester.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following course KJM9200 – Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry
Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
