KJM9140 – Chemistry of Battery Materials

Course content

The course aims to cover the basic principles of electrochemical energy storage devices with the primary focus on the materials chemistry. In addition to basic principles and relevant characterization the course discuss state-of-the-art and emerging battery chemistries, including Li-, Na-, K-, Ca- ion, etc.

Learning outcome

After the completion of the course you can explain:?

  • needs for energy storage and basic operational principles of batteries, basic and advanced characterization of batteries and battery materials, manufacturing of batteries; battery systems and applications.
  • materials and chemical principles of Pb-acid, Leclanche, Ni/Cd and NiMH batteries
  • general materials aspects for Li-ion batteries and electrode design: anodes for Li-ion batteries (graphite, silicon and silicon-based materials, LTO), cathodes for Li-ion batteries (LFP, MNC and LMNO): synthesis, applications and mechanisms; electrolytes for Li-ion batteries and SEI formation; separators and current collectors for Li-ion batteries.
  • weaknesses and strengths of:
    • Next generation of Li-ion batteries: solid-state batteries (3 classes of electrolytes and challenges), Li-air and Li-S batteries.
    • Other battery chemistries: Na-ion, K-ion chemistries, multivalent systems (Mg, Ca and Al).
    • Alternative energy storage: supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors; flow batteries (basic principles and chemistries)

Teaching

The course duration is one semester. The teaching?includes:

  • 48 hours of lectures (4 hours per week, in 12 weeks)
  • 4 hours of a mandatory laboratory course and
  • one written assignment

The?laboratory course? and the final assignment must be approved?before before you can enter the final examination.

A completed and approved laboratory course and the final assignment is valid for six semesters beyond the semester it was approved. After this period, you must complete the laboratory course again to be able to sit for the final examination.

It is mandatory to attend the first lecture (including students on the waiting list). If you are unable to attend the first lecture, you must notify the Department of Chemistry before the start of the lecture, otherwise your course registration can be cancelled.

Attendance at the laboratory course is mandatory. If you are prevented from meeting, you have to show documentation that you were legally absent (medical note from a doctor or similar).

As?the?teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance.?Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Within August 10th/January 10th, international students must inform the student administration at the Department of Chemistry if English teaching is requested.

Examination

  • Final oral exam which?counts 100 % towards the final grade.

The?laboratory course and written assignment must be approved before you can take?the final exam.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for the following course: KJM5140 – Chemistry of Battery Materials

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

The examination is given in English. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
