PSY4010 – Research Design and Methodology

Course content

This course had last lectures fall 2008. Last possible exam will be scheduled for fall 2009. This due to changes in the master programs in psychology which now consists of 4 separate programs.

This course is a mandatory course in research design and methodology for students working on a thesis in the master's degree programme in psychology. The course is designed to assist students in developing their research proposals. The course will cover qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

Learning outcome

The objective is twofold:

  • The course will teach students in detail how to apply these methodologies and to take appropriate decisions when setting up their own research projects.
  • The ultimate aim is to strengthen scientific ways of thinking by emphasizing simultaneous considerations of issues of design, of measurement or production of data, of statistical-/data analysis and interpretation, of presentation of results - with reference to specified research questions in the students' own projects.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Students from other master’s programmes at the University of Oslo may be admitted into this course by individual application to the department.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

This course is offered to students on the master's programme only. All students must have studied PSY1010 and PSY2010 or equivalent courses in research methods.

Teaching

The teaching will be given through lectures and seminars.

The course has compulsory activities that must be approved before you can sit for the exam. The two compulsory activities are:

  • Construction of a survey, data gathering and analysis of the data from the survey
  • Planning, performing and analyzing a qualitative interview

Examination

3 hour exam marked pass/fail.

Examination support material

You are allowed to use English-English dictionary on the exam. There will be a set of dictionairies available at the exam. You are not allowed to use your own dictionairy.

Language of examination

English.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
