TFO1011 – Judaism and Jewish History

Course content

The course relies on and draws from Jewish studies, religious studies and the study of history. The students explore aspects of Judaism and Jewish history with an emphasis on rabbinic literature.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student has achieved the following learning outcomes defined as knowledge, skills and general competences.

Knowledge:

The student has

  • knowledge of Jewish history

  • knowledge of ritual and material expressions of Judaism

  • knowledge of Jewish religious and cultural diversity

  • developed knowledge of rabbinic literature

Skills:

The student can

  • explain and discuss selected texts from Tanakh, Talmud og Midrash

  • access and participate in Jewish discourses on identity, gender and interreligious relations

General competence:

The student has

  • basic knowledge of approaches to Jewish studies, religious studies and the study of history

  • experience with different approaches to sacred scriptures

Admission to the course

Admission to this course is limited to students on the study programme?Jewish Studies and Intercultural Competence for Jewish Paths.The study programme is part of a one-year programme,?SHVILIM Jewish Paths, organised by DMT, The Jewish Community of Oslo.

Teaching

Teaching includes a combination of lectures, discussion seminars and excursions.

Mandatory activities:

  • The course requires a minimum of 80 % presence from the students in the classes.
  • Students are required to submit one written assignment: Exercise in biblical interpretation with reflection text, ca. 1500 words.

Examination

Oral exam, ca. 25 minutes.
