Course description
Course content
This course focuses on providing practical knowledge of principal approaches and methodologies in qualitative and quantitative research. It focuses, amongst others, on the principles and practices of:
? ethnographic research, fieldwork strategies, participant observation, qualitative interviewing and discourse analysis
? social survey research, use of statistics, structured observation and content analysis
? design, data analysis and writing reports
Learning outcome
The course aims at providing students with knowledge of major types of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, as a preparation for application in their own research work.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

The Comparative and International Education Programme is open to all students who fulfil the basic requirements for admission. The main target groups are international students, for example students under the 'Quota' Programme (developing countries), NOMA scholarship students from developing countries, partner institutions, Erasmus students and NORDPLUS students. Norwegian students are also encouraged to attend.
All students in the 2nd semester of the programme have equal access to the course. Other applicants may be considered if there is capacity.
Only students who have been admitted to the course may attend the lectures, seminars and examination.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students are required to have passed the previous method course.
Teaching
The course combines lectures and seminars linked to group exercises.
There is a mandatory 80% attendance requirements for all courses. If a student does not fullfill the mandatory attendance requirement, they will need to apply for an additional assignment prior to passing the course.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
The exam consists of a written paper. Requirements and deadlines will be announced at the beginning of the course.
Students will receive a preliminary evaluation of pass/fail. Students who fail the preliminary evaluation will have the possibility to rewrite their paper.
Language of examination
The examination language is English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
The assignment will count as the entire portion of the final course grade.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
