Course content
This course provides an overview of basic perspectives on communication.
The course aims to provide an introduction to children’s oral and written language development from pre-school to early teenage years, with a particular focus on minority children’s language.
Topics that will be raised include relations between development of oral and written language, socio-cultural sources of variation in development, relations between concepts and words, and children’s development and production of expanded forms of discourse and text.
Review and discussion of these topics is intended to lead to further discussion regarding the particular challenges that are related to facilitation in minority children’s learning situations.
Learning outcome
This course aims to enable students to analyse conditions for oral and written learning in children’s interactions with pedagogues and peers in pre-school/kindergarten and school, and to help them evaluate how such conditions can be facilitated.
The course is intended to develop the students' skills in critical evaluation of linguistic-pedagogical measures for minority children.

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
It is recommended that students have at least 30 study points at a basic level in Educational Science before commencing this course.

Teaching
The course taching consists of lectures and seminars.
Students are required to submit a short reflective essay on one of the central topics, prepare and present an oral presentation in class and write a final essay. Active participation in classes is expected.
The teaching may be partially ICT-based.
Students will receive guidance in relation to work with the final essay.
Only students that are formally admitted to the course through StudentWeb may attend the classes. Students need to be formally enrolled in order to complete the course requirements.
Attendance is compulsory for the first lecture. Students that do not attend will loose the right to participate and complete the examination.
The individual student is responsible for contacting the relevant administrative contact person in the case of illness or other reasons for absence from the first lecture.
Examination

Compulsory component:
Students shall prepare an essay that is at least 3 pages. The essay shall be based on a topic chosen by the student. The essay shall be presented orally and as an academic poster
Final essay - (individual paper):
The students are required to submit a paper of 8-10 pages, individually.
The deadlines and specific guidelines for the requirements will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Both of the requirements must be completed during the same semester in order to achieve a pass in this course.
The first requirement and presentation must be completed and approved before the final essay is submitted.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The language of examination in the spring semester is generally Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish og English.
The language of examination in the autumn semester is generally English. You may submit your response in English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The final individual paper of 8-10 pages is the sole basis for the setting of the grades in this course.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
The requirements must be completed in the same semester. If the student fails or wishes to improve the grade, a new application for the course must be submittet in Studentweb. Both requriements must be completed again if the student wishes to retake the exam.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
