Course content
The course addresses the following issues:
- Perspectives on Norway as a multicultural country
- Multicultural environments; perspectives on socialization and identity formation
- Linguistic minorities in preschool and other educational institutions
- Organizing teaching in multilingual and multiethnic learning environments
- Working against racism in education
Learning outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course you will
- have insight into research-based knowledge about issues concerning childrens’ development of language and concepts, knowledge and social integration in a multicultural and mulitalingual context
- be able to document such insights as mentioned above
- have knowledge of research topics such as:
- Possibilities and challenges in multiethnic and multilingual classrooms
- Different perspectives on cultural belonging
- language learning and bilingualism
- Have a good understaning of the legal rights of linguistic minority children and youths and indigenous minorities in Norwegian schools and educational institutions.
Skills
After completing the course you will be able to apply the knowledge achieved in solving practical and theoretical issues of multicultural education from preschool to upper secondary school.

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
It is recommended that you have at least one semester of courses in educational sciences before you attend the course.

10 credits overlap with PED1310 – Flerkulturell pedagogikk (discontinued)
Teaching
The course consists of lectures, seminars and students’ oral presentations of assignments given during the course.
Student activities are central elements in the course. These include formulation of problems, presentation and discussions related to compulsory components.
Only students that are formally admitted to the course through StudentWeb may attend the classes. Students need to be formally enrolled in order to complete the course requirements.
Compulsory component:
- Attendance is compulsory for the first lecture. If you do not attend you will loose the right to participate and complete the examination. If you are ill or otherwise prevented from attending, you must contact the course administrator before the lecture.
- Two group assignments The deadlines and other requirements will be given at the beginning of the semester. The assignments must be completed and passed before you can take the exam.
Examination

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

4 hour written individual exam
Language of examination
The language of examination is English, but you may submit your text in English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
If you already have completed the compulsory components for this course,and they have been approved, you may retake the exam the next time it is offered. The approval is valid as long as the exam is offered.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
