SPED4103 – Evidence-Based Practice in Educational Audiology

Course content

Educational audiologists often work with clients with complex presentations and needs. This course focuses on developing the students’ understanding of interdisciplinary research and evidence-based practice concerning intervention for various client groups that educational audiologists meet.??

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:??

  • describe educational audiology research within a multidisciplinary perspective?

  • explain the structure of a scientific article?

  • explain evidence-based practice in educational audiology?

Skills:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:??

  • use checklists to critically evaluate scientific articles??

  • compile available evidence for intervention for a diagnosis or condition from different sources?

  • argue for a selected intervention for a diagnosis or condition based on critical evaluation of available evidence??

  • present and discuss the evidence for interventions for diagnoses and conditions related to research and practice in educational audiology??

General competence:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:??

  • critically evaluate and compare scientific articles with regard to reliability and contribution to the development of research and practice in educational audiology??

  • identify the need for future intervention research within the field of educational audiology??

  • reflect on ethical and methodological challenges related to intervention research on small and vulnerable populations

Admission to the course

Requires admission to the master’s programme in?Research in Special Needs Education or the master’s programme in Special Needs Education.?Eligible exchange students at master’s level, as well as other master students at UiO, can be admitted if there are available places.?This course is also open for international exchange students at master's level with a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent.

The course is compulsory for students on the specialisation Audiopedagogikk - spr?k, h?rsel og kommunikasjon.

Teaching

The course consists of:

  • lectures

  • journal club?

  • group meetings

  • seminar?

Compulsory components:

  • compulsory attendance to Journal club, group meetings and seminar.

  • group report

The compulsory component must be completed and approved before you are allowed to take the exam and are valid for three years.

Refer to the?guidelines for attendance in compulsory teaching sessions.

Examination

Individual home exam - 3 days?

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.

Resit an examination

Students who do not pass an exam may have a second attempt as soon as it is possible to arrange. This is called a re-sit examination. The re-sit examination is held within 3 months of the original examination.

Students who have passed their exam, but who wish to improve their grade may not participate in a re-sit examination. You may take an exam to improve your grades at the next time the course has an ordinary exam, as long as you have not already used all three attempts. The Department will provide information and guidelines about the re-sit examination.
