Immunogenetics of complex immune-mediated diseases

Most immune-mediated diseases are a result of both genetic and environmental factors, and are thus considered complex diseases. We study a range complex immune-mediated diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome and myasthenia gravis, since they share etiology.

With this project, we want to investigate molecular and cellular profiles that are characteristic of the diseases. The research group has a particular interest in studying immunogenetics, immune cell phenotypes and extracellular vesicles.

Main methods

The student will learn molecular biology methods and data analyses, including methods such as:

  • DNA extraction, PCR and genotyping
  • Isolation of immune cells
  • RNA extraction and real time PCR
  • Separation of extracellular vesicles
  • Protein analyses including Western blotting
  • Library preparation and high throughput sequencing
  • Bioinformatic analyses
  • Statistical analyses for comparing patients and controls

The student’s responsibilities

We expect that the student will participate in the group’s regular project and literature meetings, read up on relevant literature, and present your project at internal meetings.
