Presentation
Emily Burger, PhD will discuss how mathematical disease simulation modeling (decision-analytic modeling) has helped inform cervical cancer prevention policies both nationally and globally. Dr. Burger will provide background on HPV and cervical cancer epidemiology, prevention tools like vaccination and screening, and the development of mathematical models to analyze prevention strategies. Case studies from Norway, Australia, and the US will demonstrate how dynamic transmission models and cost-effectiveness analyses have evaluated policies over time, including routine HPV vaccination programs, catch-up campaigns, expanding to boys, and switching screening tests.
Dr. Burger will also provide examples from her work with the WHO's Cervical Cancer Elimination Modeling Consortium where simulation models were pivotal in helping the WHO set global elimination targets by projecting the impact of alternative prevention strategies. Overall, the presentation will illustrate how decision-analytic modeling has complemented empirical evidence to quantify trade-offs, support transparent priority-setting, and project the effects of cervical cancer prevention policies on both national and global scales.
Speaker
Emily Burger is an Associate Professor at the Department of Health Management and Health Economics at the University of Oslo, as well as a Research Scientist at Harvard Center for Health Decision Science in the US. Her academic interests include applying mathematical modeling methods (i.e., decision-analytic models) to evaluate efficient and cost-effective health policies related to women's health and prevention of disease in both high- and low-resource settings. In 2023, she received the Norwegian Cancer Society's award for Young Researcher of the Year.

About the seminar series
Once a month, dScience will invite you to join us for lunch and professional talks at the Science Library. In addition to these, we will serve lunch in our lounge in Kristine Bonnevies house every Thursday. Due to limited space (40 people), this will be first come, first served. See how to find us here.
Our lounge can also be booked by PhDs and Postdocs on a regular basis, whether it is for a meeting or just to hang out – we have fresh coffee all day long!
