Oslo Municipality and the government are implementing measures to reduce the Covid-19 infection, and are introducing measure level A in Viken. As a consequence, UiO?s reading rooms and buildings are closing to students.
– This was not an easy decision to make. We know that it is demanding for the students not to have access to campus, and they have already taken a large part of the burden of the Covid-19 measures, says Rector Svein St?len and continues:
– But the level of infection in Oslo is high and increasing, in addition, the test capacity is getting close to its limits, and we see an increased number of hospital admissions. In a situation where many of our students live near campus, but where very many also live further away, it is our overall assessment that it is necessary to close reading rooms and libraries for a period to reduce the risk of infection spreading, he says.
Students who need access to premises to have skills training or carry out experiments in laboratories to maintain their study progression, will still have access to the buildings and physical education in accordance with infection control restrictions. Students will receive information about whom this applies to from their respective study programs. And the University of Oslo Library is setting up a an arrangement for collecting books.
Digital teaching
The university's buildings will be closed to students from Tuesday 16 March at 12:00. All ordinary teaching will be digital from Tuesday 16 March until 11 April. Students are asked to stay tuned on Canvas and My Studies for more information about teaching.
– We are happy that the students have had access to the university for a few weeks now, but the situation is now so serious in Oslo that we too must do what we can to reduce the infection rate. We hope that these measures will contribute to us being able to open up more in April, says St?len.
Don?t give up!
St?len understands that many people may be upset that the buildings are closing.
– For two semesters, our students have shown that despite strong measures, they have managed to study and complete their exams. Brighter times are ahead, and we hope that you will all manage and take part in this huge effort as we look forwards towards summer, says St?len.
