Approximately eight thousand new students are starting their studies at the University of Oslo this week. Many of them gathered at the University Square to be welcomed to the university by rector Ragnhild Hennum. She promised the students substantial academic knowledge, a generous and inclusive community, and an open and democratic university.
– Academic freedom is one of the university's core foundations. It is a freedom that requires a culture where disagreement is not merely tolerated but valued. So don’t be afraid to ask questions and challenge established truths. It is how we develop new knowledge together, she said.

Loosen up and make some noise

Minister of Health and Care Services Jan Christian Vestre was also part of the programme, sharing three pieces of advice for new students: loosen up, make some noise, and take care of each other.
– You don’t have to follow a conventional study path to have a good time at university. You can do things a bit differently and still enjoy yourself, Vestre remarked.
Exciting events all week
1300 buddies are prepared to greet the new students. This week, the new students can look forward to humour, shows, quizzes, live student radio, and activities with their buddy group.

In addition, the faculties have a rich and varied programme planned, with plenty happening throughout August.
