2024 marks 30 years since the establishment of ARENA Centre for European Studies. The conference will reflect on the significant changes that have taken place in Europe during this period and how the field of European studies has developed since 1994. The European Union has expanded significantly in depth and breadth since then, as part of a greatly changed European political landscape.
The first part of the conference will consist in a “researcher relay” showcasing ARENA’s research on the transformations Europe has undergone and the challenges it is currently facing.
This year is also the 30th anniversary of the Norwegian referendum rejecting EU membership. In the second part of the conference a panel composed of participants from the Nordic countries will reflect on the implications of the Nordic countries’ decisions to join or stay out of the EU. The panel will discuss the Nordic countries experiences with their EU affiliations and the role of the ‘Nordic dimension’ in contemporary Europe.
